About this Exhibit:

The collection of photographs represented here, have been selected because they are the photographer’s favorites. Many of them are visions of America’s natural beauty – both rural and urban. Some of the images are from distant lands such as Greece and Spain. All of them provide the viewer an esthetic focal point to where one can be transported while contemplating that special place.

Supporting a Worthy Cause:

A portion of all proceeds from this exhibition and sale will be donated to National Geographic’s Afghan Children’s Fund. The ACF serves all children in Afghanistan and Afghani child refugees living in Pakistan. Since its inception in 2002, thousands of generous donors like you have contributed more than $1,000,000 that has made a difference in the lives of children effected by the Taliban regime and the current struggle for freedom and democracy in their homeland. By purchasing a photograph today, you will personally have a significant impact on the future of education for Afghanistan’s children.

Biography:

Nadia Hughes has for 12 years been working as a Photo Editor at The National Geographic Society’s Image Collection, winnowing down thousands of images to only the very best selections for commercial and editorial clients.  It is no wonder then, that her discerning eye has found its way to her own viewfinder as a photographer with a keen sense of composition, color and humor qualities.

A first-generation Ukrainian-American, Hughes grew up in Simsbury, Connecticut the youngest of five children where her sibling position allowed her to be a silent observer of people and their surroundings.  She has taken this characteristic and parlayed it into an extension of her camera lens—quiet, subtle, unobtrusive and sensitive.
Hughes has edited collections for the Society’s top photographers and culled thousands of images for national advertising campaigns promoting the products of Fortune 500 clients such as United Airlines and Microsoft, and most recently was the photo researcher for a popular educational history video game as well as a series of NG children’s books on countries of the world. Her work has appeared on the National Geographic Kids website and National Geographic Children’s Atlas. Her images are sought after both by major advertising firms via Getty Images to illustrate clients’ messaging and also by individuals seeking accessible artwork to grace their home via AllPosters.com

Her original work hangs in the dozens of collections of arts patrons the world over and has raised thousands of dollars at gala charity auctions across the country to benefit diverse organizations including: The Washington National Opera, The Helen Hayes Awards Gala, The Washington Nationals Foundation for Children’s Hospital, The Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown Hospital, The Latin-American Youth Center at Fight Night, The National Italian-American Foundation, and The Ukrainian-American Foundation Fund for Orphans.

Hughes is an active member of the American Society of Picture Professionals and served as the DC Chapter’s treasurer of from 2006 – 2008.  She currently serves on the Jury Selection and Gala Committees for FotoWeek DC.  She has served as a juror for the American University’s School of Communication’s Spring Photo Festival.

Hughes received a BA in Photography from the School of Communication at American University.  She has shot all over the world including Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Greece and Spain as well as across the United States.  She lives with her husband Jared Hughes, an independent non-profit fundraising consultant, in Takoma Park, MD with their two handsome cats and two darling dogs.

Hughes is happy to be showing her work at several venues around the nation’s capital this fall in conjunction with FotoWeekDC. She maintains a personal website at www.NadiaHughesPhotography.com and is commercially represented by the National Geographic Image Collection. It can be viewed by visiting www.NationalGeographicStock.com and searching her name.
